Playing Backgammon on The Zone is Ending

Digg it Digg This

The late 1990’s and early years of this millennium were a time of great experimentation in the Internet in the backgammon, chess and other board games and various gaming sites industry.

One of the great said “If you build it, they will come (and we’ll eventually find a way to make money from it)” sites was the MSN Gaming Zone, who held one of the largest gaming comunities including a backgammon comunity as well.  While the backgammon software was buggy and the sysops totally untrained, it generated a gaming community the likes of which I doubt we’ll ever see again.

As of June 19, 2006, the backgammon Zone is no more.  Microsoft still has a product they call the Zone, but it’s not – it’s a messenger-based game with abysmal software and no chat or sense of community.

There are still, of course, online places to play backgammon.  They work on different paradigms.

I hope we will still see the backgammon comunity grow further and that more people will come and play backgammon online, weather it be playing for money or playing for free.
