Recently some people have been using Snowie to help them win matches, although this is not necessarily cheating but some people take advantage of this software to gain an unfair advantage during a match. I have a backgammon software page that details the game software available online as well as a specific page that describes in detail the Backgammon software Snowie. Snowie can be bought here if you want to try it out

If you want to know what your true skill is, and not worry about cheating, there are tournament groups on the Zone and other sites such as GammonEmpire with honest rating systems.  Find out about the MSN backgammon ratings here.  Or play on other gaming sites online.

When the Zone rated rooms first started, they were pretty honest - for a short while.  Then some players discovered that they could create a dummy account and forfeit matches to themselves.  So you had 99.9% honest players, and 0.1% cheaters, but of course the cheaters were at the top of the ratings.  Eventually the Zone (with some pressure from various parties, including me) started to look for players with obviously cheating records and reset their ratings.

However, over time, the Zone ratings have become a total joke.  There are so many forms of cheating and rating manipulation that it's not even worth discussing them all.  The Zone could fix them very easily.  But they won't.  In fact, I know they had some fixes on their "To-Do" list not that long ago.  But I guess they had more important things to do, like come up with a login system designed to anger and frustrate the players.

So just take it from me.  Zone backgammon ratings don't mean a darn thing. Nada.  Nil.  Even if you play honestly, your rating is affected by the manipulators and cheats that you play.  You can have fun playing in the rated rooms, and my guess is that for casual play you'll find better players there than in the other rooms.  But don't think that your rating means anything.  It doesn't.

As for other forms of cheating - no, there is no way to manipulate the dice.

But as for ratings cheating on the Zone, it's not worth worrying about.  The whole rating system is so badly broken that it doesn't matter anymore.
